Introducing Phase V FileCabinet(tm) ---------------------------- FileCabinet(tm) database programs are easy to use and specially tailored for tracking various specific collections. Programs are available for the following types of collections: Stamps Software Home Inventory Video Tapes Magazines Coins Recipes FileCabinet(tm) data files are compatible with Borland's Paradox database. Hardware/Software Requirements ------------------------------ Each of the FileCabinet(tm) programs requires an IBM PC-compatible computer running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher in standard or enhanced mode and approximately 1.5 megabytes of free hard disk space. Installing the File Cabinet Programs ------------------------------------ The files on the distribution diskette are compressed. This means you MUST use the provided setup program to install File Cabinet programs. To run setup, start up Windows and choose "Run..." from the Program Manager's File menu. Type "a:\setup" in the command line field and click OK. Setup prompts you for the drive and directory where you want FileCabinet(tm) installed. If you have more than one of the FileCabinet(tm) programs, you should install them in the same directory. Setup then copies and decompresses the program files. Finally, setup installs a FileCabinet(tm) group in Program Manager and adds an icon for the appropriate collection. Notes on Running FileCabinet(tm) Programs ------------------------------------------ Once a FileCabinet(tm) program is installed, you can start it by simply double-clicking on its icon in Program Manager. NOTE: FileCabinet(tm) database engine requires that DOS's SHARE program be installed. If it isn't, the program will notify you of the problem and quit immediately. It is highly recommended that you install SHARE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. NOTE: If you have Borland's Paradox database or any other products that use the Paradox engine, File Cabinet may display a message indicating that one or more Paradox settings (in the WIN.INI file) need to be changed. This would occur, for instance, if the maximum number of tables needs to be increased. If you choose OK, FileCabinet(tm) will automatically make these changes for you. If you choose Cancel, FileCabinet(tm) will quit. When FileCabinet(tm) is started, it asks whether you want to create a new database or open an existing one. Database names must be eight characters or less, since they are MS-DOS filenames. Once you have specified a database to work with, FileCabinet(tm)'s main collection window appears. This window is divided into two parts. The upper part contains text fields which display the information in one record of your collection. (A record is a collection of fields of various types that includes all information about a single database entry. For example, each record in the video tape collection includes a field for the title, a field for the director, a field for the genre, etc.). The lower part of the window contains buttons for adding records, doing searches, preparing reports, etc. If you are starting a new database, you can immediately start typing in information. To select a given text field, use the tab key or click on the field with your mouse. When you finish entering the fields for one record, select the New Record button and you're on to the next one. When you're done, hit the Exit button. All records are saved in the current file. Database Operations ------------------- FileCabinet(tm)'s main collection window contains buttons to perform all database operations with the click of a mouse button. To move between records in your collection, use the buttons in the Browse Records group. You can move to the first, last, next, or previous record by simply clicking the appropriate button. The text fields above the buttons are updated to show the selected record. Choose the New Record button to begin entering data for a new record. A new, empty record is presented. Choose the Delete Record button to remove the currently displayed record from the database. Choose Save Record if you have edited an existing record and want to save it. If you edit an existing record and do not choose Save Record before moving to another record, your changes WILL NOT BE SAVED. Click the Search button to search for a record. FileCabinet(tm) collections can be searched by any field in the record. Select the field to search on, type in the string to search for, click OK, and the results are presented. To print a report (to the screen or printer) containing any combination of fields, click on Report. A dialog box similar to the search dialog appears. Select the field of interest, type in a match string, select the field to sort by, click OK, and FileCabinet(tm) generates your report. For general product information, including the version number and tech support phone number, click the about button. To quit FileCabinet(tm), select the Exit button. All changes to the database are saved (actually, changes are saved as they are made), and the program quits.
